Real Lives: With hardship comes ease
Issue 100 January 2013
Life is full of challenges, as well as ups and downs but what matters most is how we bounce back and stay positive after going through a traumatic ordeal.
Everyone faces difficulties and challenges in life. They can go through ups and downs, but what matters most is how people bounce back following a time of despair. Our With Hardship Comes Ease section was inspired by the Qur’anic verse, “For indeed, with hardship comes ease.” (94:5) When God puts us through difficult times, we must maintain hope that things will change for the better. All the stories that we have featured in this section are evidence of this, and we hope that people can take inspiration from them.
Following 9/11, Rais Bhuiyan was shot in the face by a white supremacist, who was fuelled by feelings of hate and ignorance. After Rais managed to get his life back together, he began to think about his attacker and following the Prophet’s example of forgiveness, he embarked on a campaign to spare him the death penalty. Although he was unsuccessful, Rais continues to work to educate people about the virtues of peace.
Achmat Hassiem was on a lifeguard-training course off a beach in South Africa, when he spotted a great white shark swimming towards his brother. He drew the shark away whilst his brother swam to safety, but the shark attacked Achmat and bit the bottom half of his right leg off. Following this ordeal, he could have become depressed, but his family kept him positive, and after receiving a prosthetic leg, he took up swimming again and recently participated in the 2012 Paralympics, where he won a bronze medal in the 100m butterfly race.
