Review by Irfan Akram
A project by Muslim Hands and hosted by the Institute of English Studies, the Young Muslim Writers Awards took place on the 26th of May.The ceremony was attended by shortlisted entrants from across the UK and abroad, with parents, teachers and an array of special guests from the world of publishing and journalism.
The occasion was launched through a live interactive performance of poetry, percussion and painting, choreographed by Mohammed Ali of Aerosol Arabic. The award winning poets celebrated the power of the word and inspired with their masterful ability to wield it. “The number of schools and children that participated in this first year, along with the quality of entries clearly demonstrates that the future for British Muslim writers’ is bright,” said Asma Khanom, Coordinator of the Young Muslim Writers Awards.
